selections from The Pearl by John Steinbeck

“Because the story has been told so often, it has taken root in every man’s mind. And, as with all retold tales that are in people’s hearts, there are only good and bad things and black and white things and good and evil things and no in-between anywhere.” (0) Continue reading

it’s calling me [archive]

i’m slowly going a little bit crazy everyday because i can’t hear my music on very loud speakers. i’ve got my laptop and headphones. the laptop speakers are endearing. i like putting on old jazz because it makes me feel like i’m listening to an old-fashioned radio. unfortunately, something like Animal Collective is essentially unlistenable on the speakers because you don’t hear all those little details that make the song. so then i use my headphones. they’re fantastic, but it’s a much different experience just throwing on Tool or Daft Punk or something through powerful speakers and letting a million light reflections pass over you.

music music music music music

yesterday a scripps girl in my Greek class was wearing a daft punk ALIVE 2007 tour baby doll. i nearly shit myself. oh my god oh my god oh my god daft punk ?! !? ?! !? “yeah! i saw them TWICE last year!” wow, really!? i saw them three times :) :) :) “WHAT! i knew someone would say that to me eventually! i saw them at Vegoose and Berkeley” wow me too!… and at Coney Island. wow wow wow you are the most awesome person ever. for sure for sure. (i think i’m a little obsessed with daft punk). the whole class i kept spacing out with lights and music flashing through my little head.

for Attic Tragedy, i read about how Agamemnon sacrificed his baby girl in order to gain the gods’ favor in his war against Troy. the day he returns from the war, his wife Clymanaestra kills him and his future-fortelling mistress, Cassandra. you would think it would be nice to have an oracle for your mistress, but if you do, just watch your back, is all i’m saying.

i haven’t looked like that lately, that is, sleeping. until today. i woke up late and just took a nap too. i didn’t plan on going out last night but Elaina easily pressured me into it. it was fun and i met some more people in my program. more importantly, the punk talked to me a lot about very serious funny stuff, like relationships. it was interesting, but i think i’m through explaining. i don’t understand myself, why would i try to explain myself? i’d much rather climb a hill, blind, and take in the view.

meden agan, nothing in excess
gnothi sauton, know yourself

today Elaina, Hannah, Maddy, Xanthe, Caitlin, and i climbed Lycabettus Hill, one of (the?) tallest hills in the city. we walked in the rain, at first, but eventually it all cleared and we could see the whole world. i always doubt it, though. what if Tiresias were there? would he be able to see more than all of us combined? what is a vision? what is an excess? what is knowing yourself? my mind is loopy right now.
