My Week Beats Your Year [archive]

i have officially embarked on a Telefon Tel Aviv spiral. starting today, i now have their four full-lengths:

Fahrenheit Fair Enough (2001)
Map of What is Effortless (2004)
Remixes Compiled (2007)
Immolate Yourself (2009)

it was Chris who urged me on to get the two i was missing. i have no problem with it. these guys are great. after having a pretty good bout with Immolate Yourself, i’m slowly getting pretty into Map of What is Effortless. ’round midnight (because i didn’t feel like going dancing at a bar with a bunch of people) i decided to go on a wander through Athens. i walked towards the acropolis with no real destination, bundled up and listening to that album. check out the lyrics for this song, “My Week Beats Your Year.” if you haven’t heard this song yet, just imagine this incredibly self-indulgent girl, sitting on a couch at 6am after a night of partying, coked up and drunk, letting these words drip from her mouth. then lay a thin but forceful beat on top, manipulate the shit out of 1 in 10 of her words, and you got this song:

i stepped off the plane
it was so fresh
i was at the club
it was so fresh
sometimes
things just have a way of
making themselves clear
most times i don’t even care cause
my week beats your year
i went to the show
it was sooooooo fresh
got drunnkkk
at the bar
it was so fresh
sometimes
your eyes have a way that makes you draw me near
most times
i don’t even care cause
my week beats your year
then i was at the party
and it was so fresh
i was looking soooooo dope
and it was so fresh
sometimes
things just have a way of
making themselves clear
most times
i don’t even care cause
my week beats your year

coincidentally, my walk ended me up in Monastiraki–a neighborhood in Athens very likely full of these girls (and their boyfriends) walking around, looking for the most fresh bar in their dopey outfits. not really feeling like going to one of these bars by myself, i just ordered a coffee at a corner cafe and took a seat outside. within about two minutes, Zach and Hannah ran into me. they were part of the group i declined to go with earlier. i was cracking up. eventually Elaina, Logan, Zoe caught up with them. i looked for a chillout spot and found a dance party. couldn’t really say no.

we went to this place called Spirit that seemed pretty chill with a side of shitty music. i guess this is where i disagreed with a lot of the people i was with, because early in the night the music consisted of every dancy hit of the past 20 years, served cold. but as the night went on, the hits kept coming, only mixed and fucked with into straight techno and house beats. everyone was into the beginning, i was into the end. regardless, everyone had a pretty good time. i had a couple drinks, danced a little bit, ended up being pretty happy that i went. the dj was from New York and Elaina and i tried in vain to get him to play something Daft Punky, at least some unknown Kanye hit at least. but then about five minutes later, he plays New Order’s Blue Monday! that made me pretty happy. especially since yesterday i claimed that it’s my 16th favorite song ever.

on the topic of New Order, i think Power, Corruption, & Lies is an essential album for any fans of electronic music. Wikipedia has it genrized as Post-Punk / Alternative Dance / Synth Pop / New Wave, but all you really need to know is that the synthscapes here haven’t really been improved upon by many artists since the release of this 1983 beast.

i just hung out with two absolutely legitimately bonafide born-and-raised Greeks! my high school friend, Andreas, saw from facebook that i was in Athens, so he messaged his cousin who lives here and gave me his number. a week later, i’m sitting on my balcony chilling with him and his girlfriend. it’s pretty funny: we decided to meet in front of the marble stadium, where about 30 people at any given time walk around, to and fro, sitting, looking, doing nothing. even though neither of us had either seen a picture of each other, we instantly knew each other when we saw each other. i love how that happens. they seem really cool (and his English is more than decent) so we’re going to try to hang out sometime soon.
