selections from Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

“She’ll come back and be a serious Americanah like Bisi,” Ranyinudo said.

They roared with laughter, at that word “Americanah,” wreathed in glee, the fourth syllable extended, and at the thought of Bisi, a girl in the form below them, who had come back from a short trip to America with odd affectations, pretending she no longer understood Yoruba, adding a slurred r to every English word she spoke. “The Big, The Bad” by Hillary Gravendyk

Thicket of tall signs and a leafy coolness. Footstep like a crumpled page. It isn’t prowling, it’s the secret of animals. Eye to the green air. Footstep like a bone snapping. The kind of hunger that swallows you. A scene-stealing cast of birds. Something nestled, nestling. Footstep like a mousetrap. All the smaller creatures a glassy glitter along the floor. The collective appetite of bees. Belly sown with stone. Footstep like a wind tunnel. A punishment of dogs, a grief of snakes. White promise dull on the tongue. What is kept, what is exchanged. Run or water, basket or bomb. A sharp gift for another. What big woods these are. Who goes softly there? Footstep like a fire blooming. Mouth: my heart, opening wide. Continue reading

notes from ID1 — Property, Privacy, and Possession (2006)

i hate owning tons of shit, but often i have trouble throwing any of it away because of sentimental value or because i feel like my 40 year old self would have some fun looking through it. so sometimes i digitize the shit (for example, scan memorabilia) to make it easier to burn the actual physical thing. well, right now i found some old class notebooks that i don’t really want in my possession anymore, so i’m going to transcribe random bits of my notes from them onto this blog. the following are from my ID1 class, “Property, Privacy, and Possession” taught by Professor Bull, first semester freshman year.

1

Copyright applies to words, not ideas (eg – newspapers coping the Times’ stories)

Plagiarism depends on context of situation (eg – Performance or Composition? What’s important?)

is it ethical to recreate another’s life in a work?

what about internalized phrases from childhood? (eg – musicians’ influences)

Plagiarizing vs. being unoriginal
copying verbatim vs. paraphrasing

2

“if value, then right”

Free cultures are cultures that leave a great deal open for others to build upon; unfree or permission cultures leave much less. Ours was a free culture. It is becoming much less so.

Political discourse becomes isolated and isolated discourse becomes more extreme.

File-sharer Types

B. use sharing networks to sample music before purchasing
C. use sharing networks to get access to copyrighted content no longer sold
D. use sharing networks to get access to content not copyrighted

2002 RIAA Report:

SoundScan Report:
# CDs released ↓ 20% since 1999
average $ of CD ↑ 7.2% between 1999 and 2001 ($13.04 → $14.19)

***** 2.1 billion CDs were downloaded for free *****

2.6x the total # CDs sold were downloaded

“positive law” — words from legislatures
“common law” — words from judges

“the royalty owed the copyright owner of an unregistered work for the derivative reuse of the work will be a flat 1 percent of net revenues, to be held in escrow for the copyright owner”

“Creative property owners must be accorded the same rights and protection resident in all other property owners in the nation.” — Jack Valenti, president of the Motion Picture Association of America, 1982

“established companies have an interest in excluding future competitors” — Bill Gates, 1991

how many years until a copyrighted work enters a public domain…
in 1790? 28
in 1831? 42
in 1909? 56
in 2006? 95

There’s that overwhelming danger if the government becomes Stalinist… communications to stage an attack, which one seems more likely?… that after the government… approve of this… covertly.

oh God. Orwell. Bull. Simkins. K*rr.

SEEING LIKE A STATE

Previous data issues:
medical records (to hold back epidemics)
financial records
vacations, etc.

data issues:
names
addresses
occupation

BIG Question: How does this change how we look at privacy?

Where do we reconcile the right to privacy with a state’s desire to coordinate?

21

WARREN AND BRANDEIS

PARALLELS BETWEEN PROPERTY RIGHTS/PRIVACY/COPYRIGHT

“Gossip has become a trade ….. details of sexual relations ….. for the indolent …..”

Exempt from Privacy:
newsworthiness
elected officials
anything in a court of law

Technology changes the issues!

Step away from being a celebrity?

9/11 COMMISSION REPORT

Left: more privacy
Right: more security
the trade-off????

Why do you care that the government can see everything you’ve packed in your bag?

If you’ve done nothing wrong, you’ve got nothing to hide. [Why is this a fallacy?]

that’s it, for the most part. i left out a couple pages. clearly, i suck at taking notes. nah… it was just more of a discussion class than anything. i got a B, yippee! Continue reading
