Mozart 41, super bowl 0 [archive]

people told me that the washing machines here didn’t work, but nobody told me that stepping into that basement room equals experiencing the divine light of the holiest of holies of musty, moldy, and miserable smells. goodness. sorry. i just went there and had to get that out there.

i regret to inform you that i missed the super bowl. i guess i’m just that European. see, last night i torrented Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music performing the complete Mozart symphonies (19 CDs worth of music). so instead of going out to an American bar and drinking beer ’til my liver choked, i sat all by my lonesome in my apartment and wondered how the hell someone at 8 years old could compose a complete symphony. a Mozart obsession for me is really long overdue. Beethoven and Vivaldi were too easy. Chopin and Bach really didn’t take much time for me either. Tchaikovsky is like pop music. but for some reason Mozart has yet to grab me. let’s see if that soon changes.

on a forum i check much too often, somebody started a thread entitled Your Dream Concert. everyone’s listing a few artists/bands they’d love to see, all in one night, alive or dead, however you want it. most people listed something like, “Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Beatles” (duh). a couple people described every detail. here’s mine:

i would have liked to have been present at the premiere of Handel’s Water Music (if you don’t know what this was like, read it briefly here). as the orchestra nears completion of the performance, the music would be directly plugged into Panda Bear’s computer, mixers, and other equipment. he would fuck with it a little bit near the end, and it would never “end,” because it would have just provided the segue into his tweaky set. from Water Music sounds, he starts mixing it with mostly Person Pitch type stuff, without ignoring his other music and newer sounds he’s picked up recently. his set gets increasingly psychedelic and out there, when a heart starts quietly beating underneath it all. the beating gets louder and louder, someone hears a woman screaming and every sound gets whisked away by David Gilmour opening up Breathe as lasers shoot across the sky. lo and behold, Pink Floyd starts performing The Dark Side of the Moon all the way through with a water laser show. oh yeah and Syd Barrett is playing with them.

rock on. Continue reading
