i know sleep, i know food. this weekend, i attended my fourth desert party ever and it might have been my favorite. i stomped the earth to bits, made love to the cloud-encircled full moon, and conquered kumquats. no sleep … Continue reading

“It didn’t stop you from writing it. As if every thought that tumbles through your head is so clever it would be a crime for it not to be published. The internet’s not written in pencil, Mark, it’s written in ink and you published that Erica Albright was a bitch.” — ERICA to MARK (78) Continue reading

possible reasons i have long hair:
because i want to be as pretty as a girl.
because i want to be as brilliant as a god.
because i’m lazy.
because i’m cheap.
because i like dancing to rock & roll.

possible reasons i fall in love so easily:
because it’s fun.
because it’s fun.
because it’s fun.
because it’s fun.
because it’s fun.

possible reasons music moves my soul:
because of the bass.
because it’s free, instant, and infinite pure happiness.
because i can’t be fucking all day, every day.
because i can’t be sleeping all day, every day.
because it’s the next best thing to death, it’s life.

possible reasons numbers rule my moves:
because i’m always listening to music.
because it’s something to do.
because i cannot make decisions.
because physics.
because i’m never checking the time.

possible reasons i have a blog:
because i’m a stoner.
because it’s the 21st century.
because sometimes people i want to talk to aren’t online.
because i hate talking, but i like thinking; something’s gotta give.
because i always have. Continue reading

patterns persist, what matters exists. linger long zoom under my thumb. sonic boom says more than i’ll ever defenestrate from the glass in my face. Owsla, bionic titanium gleam. Owsla, six months dream-cleaving. Owsla, black tinkering with disco feet.

as my vagina blonde bomb sobers home on the chrome bay slug, i write these words. i listen to music that is said to weigh more than other music. it was given to me by a much-more-than-a-friend(-in-many-ways) but Facebook did not provide that as an option for “Relationship Status” at the time. it’s still not an option.

it’s as if i think all my thoughts are wedded and, therefore, i can go there without the four steps that most other people might take. that sentence is no fun to read.

“The Owsla are soldiers, guardians of the warren. To us Owsla is the front line of nature, the last defense against destructive human race.”

my mind is still blown by the fact that nature is defined to be things opposed to humans or human creations. what the fuck is “human nature” then? a weird, metaphysical bubble that spontaneously materialized in the vacuum separating “nature” and “humans”? is language failing or am i?

rock music is music made with guitars, drums, and other instruments where you can really touch the music. hit a drum, it makes a sound. (all computers are drums?) electronic music is music made with devices where you manipulate electricity into sound. (sex.) electronic rock begs the venn diagram. human nature begs a multidimensional graph.

is it nervy to chase Coltrane with Britney? Efrafa with Iggy?

in plain type: i’m frightened of attachment, can’t show that much affection all the time. Continue reading

there is zero correlation between how clean you keep your room and how much you like to party.

i wrote something about Egypt this week. it started out all newsy as a discussed protests in Midan Tahrir like a perfect CNN correspondent, but it quickly devolved into a messy orgy proclaiming the greatness of People and the Internet and the buzz word that binds them, social media.

oh well.

i wish i could (i can’t think of the word i can’t think of the word i can’t think of the word i can’t think of the word i can’t think of the word VERBALIZE) verbalize my newfound feelings and thoughts toward Music and Life. maybe “newfound” isn’t the right word, since those thoughts and feelings have been transforming subtly for years. but lately they seem emboldened and fear not the consequences of controlling my entire consciousness, directing my entire existence. if you asked me the meaning of life, i would probably answer “sex,” but that doesn’t really get to the heart of it.

i think it’s Rhythm. i live for Rhythm. Rhythm, from Greek ῥυθμός [rhythmos], “any regular recurring motion, symmetry.” Sex is the Rhythm of bodies in search of wicked epidermal pleasure (and other joys, far deeper than the skin). eating, sleeping, drinking, breathing are various activities we must continue–Rhythmically–to sustain our beings.

and Music? Music is the Rhythm of Everything.

that’s not hyperbole. when we think of Music, like this Ziggy Stardust i’m treating my ears to right now, we’re thinking of multiple Rhythms. most significantly, there’s the Rhythm inside my ear, the Rhythm of my cochlear fluid, in turn vibrating little hairs which translate that Rhythm into electricity; everyone’s brains loves a little electricity. before reaching my ear, Rhythm disturbed the air–mostly nitrogen, oxygen, and argon–all around me. just imagine, millions of little molecules dancing to “he’d like to come and meet us but he thinks he’d blow our minds”. and everyone knows the end (beginning?) of the story: little (humongous?) cones move back and forth, saying dance nitrogen! dance oxygen! dance argon!

but Music extends beyond the vibrations of loudspeakers, air molecules, and weird human anatomical mechanisms:

cars zooming across the United States… fog rolling over the hills of Daly City… high-heeled girls walking through sunlit Tokyo streets… a monkey in Nicaragua eating by himself at the top of a tree… rocks secretly tumbling down submerged cliffs in the Mediterranean sea… a superstorm cooling on the face of Jupiter… ions quibbling in the heart of the Sun… suburban band members arguing over their name… an English son of a bitch setting his piano on fire… in Indonesia, a clerk counts his money for the day… in Egypt, a snake chooses to slither left around the rock not right… in South Africa, a book of world records falls off the shelf… a video chat between two lost lovers so garbly it requires a new word to describe the amount of pixely garbage.

that’s the Music, the Rhythm i’m talking about. the same way that there’s a pattern in here:
